Community Participation funding is one of the most under-used categories in many NDIS plans — and that's a missed opportunity. Used well, it transforms isolated routines into rich, connected lives.

What community participation actually covers

Community Participation supports are designed to help you engage in activities outside the home — social, recreational, cultural, sporting, or learning-based. It's funded under Capacity Building and Core, and can include:

  • One-to-one support worker hours so you can attend an activity you couldn't access alone
  • Group programs (cooking, art, fitness, gaming, gardening)
  • Skills classes that lead to volunteering or employment
  • Travel training to use public transport confidently

The wellbeing case

Mental health

Social isolation is a known risk factor for depression and anxiety. Even one regular, predictable social activity each week measurably improves mood for most people.

Physical health

Most community activities involve movement — walking to the venue, standing, using your hands. Participants who attend two or more activities a week show measurable improvements in stamina and balance.

Cognition

Learning new routines, navigating new spaces, and meeting new people all stimulate cognitive function in ways that home-based routines rarely do.

Choosing the right program

The best programs match your interests, not just your access needs. Ask:

  1. What would I do if I could do anything?
  2. Is there a quiet, low-pressure version of that activity?
  3. Do I want one-to-one support, or to meet others with similar experiences?
  4. How will I get there, and how will I get home?
